Winterizing your Rain Barrel

When the weather changes to chillier temperatures, the leaves fall and snow is on it’s way, it is time to winterize your rain barrel. Follow the 5 steps below to properly winterize your barrel system:

1. Empty the barrel of all water. We do not recommend that any water is left in your barrel through the winter. This is because water, when frozen, expands, which could cause a crack your barrel and damage to other parts of your system.

2. Use your hose with a high pressure spray to rinse out your barrel. If you have accumulated buildup or algae you can spray with a solution of equal parts Castile soap and vinegar (or lemon juice), hydrogen peroxide, or a diluted bleach solution (1/4 tsp. per 1 quart of water). Let it set for a few minutes and then rinse out again.  Be sure to rinse out AWAY from plants, animals, people.  Another bleach-alternative is www.wetandforget.com (you can find this at ACE Hardware).

3. OPTIONAL: Store your barrel in your garage or shed.  If you must store it outside, we recommend you store the barrel upside down and covered with a tarp for additional protection.

4. Remove the diverter from the gutter and disassemble the rain water system. Remember to wear protective gear near the edges of the gutter.

5. Attach the winter cover that came with your parts kit and secure with the same screws that secured the diverter. Keep all other parts together in one area so you can grab and go to set them back up in Spring!

Following these 5 steps is important to keeping your rainwater catchment system in good working condition and ready for use again next season. During the winter months, enjoy the warmth from our family to yours and thank you once again for supporting small, local business!
